Dr. Annie-Laurie McRee received her Doctorate of Public Health (Dr P.H.). in maternal and child health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned her M.P.H. in health behavior and health education from the University of Michigan. Dr. McRee came to CSR from the University of Minnesota where she was an associate professor of pediatrics and director for training of the university’s Leadership Education in Adolescent Health program which trains an interdisciplinary cadre of pre-and post-doctoral fellows for leadership in child and adolescent health. Dr. McRee’s research examined adolescent and young adult health and preventive health services, with a primary focus on social and behavioral determinants of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. Her research has resulted in over 100 peer-reviewed publications. In 2019, she was awarded the McKnight Presidential Fellowship for excellence in scholarship and leadership.

Title: Insider’s Guide to the NIH Grant Process

Overview: This session will provide an inside look to the NIH grant process from submission to review.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the difference between a scientific review officer (SRO) and program officer (PO).
  2. Identify where to find funding announcements and study sections.
  3. Describe the post-submission review process by NIH.

Gabriela Ortiz holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of California, Davis and a master's degree in economics from California State University, Long Beach. Gabriela is a primary author of Stata's reporting manual and has contributed to the development of each of the reporting features. She also developed and regularly teaches several of Stata's webinars.

Title: STATA: New Meta-analysis Features in Stata 18 

(Free licenses will be available for some of the attendees).

Handout provided prior to workshop for registered participants.

Objectives: 

1. Learn how to perform multilevel meta-analysis in Stata with the new meta multilevel and meta meregress commands.

2. Find out how to assess the heterogeneity jointly for all levels of the hierarchy and for each level.

3. Learn how to perform meta-analysis of one-sample binary data and learn about the effect sizes commonly used with these data.

Profile

Ruopeng An is an Associate Professor at Washington University in St. Louis. He conducts research to assess population-level policies, local food and built environment, and socioeconomic determinants that affect individuals’ dietary behavior, physical activity, sedentary lifestyle, and adiposity in children, adults of all ages, and people with disabilities. His research aims to develop a well-rounded knowledge base and policy recommendations that can inform decision-making and the allocation of resources to combat obesity.

An’s research has been funded by federal agencies and public/private organizations (e.g., OpenAI, Abbott, Amgen). He has wide teaching and methodological expertise, including applied artificial intelligence (machine and deep learning), quantitative policy analysis (causal inference, cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analysis, and microsimulation), applied econometrics and regression analysis, and systematic review and meta-analysis. He founded and chairs the Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Analytics for Public Health (AIBDA) Certificate program and hosts the “Artificial Intelligence in the Social Sciences” Open Classroom series. He has repeatedly been recognized for teaching excellence, receiving student evaluations in the top 10% of University faculty.

With over 200 peer-reviewed journal publications, Dr. An is recognized as one of Elsevier’s top 2% most cited scientists. His work has been highlighted by media outlets such as TIME, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Reuters, USA Today, Bloomberg, Forbes, Atlantic, Guardian, FOX, NPR, and CNN. He serves on research grants and expert panels for NIH, CDC, NSF, HHS, USDA, and the French National Research Agency. He is a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology and the American Academy of Health Behavior.

  1. Learn about ChatGPT's knowledge base and natural language processing capabilities to leverage it as a powerful tool in scientific research.
  2. Acquire skills in prompt engineering to interact effectively with ChatGPT, enhancing its utility in various research processes including topic formulation, literature review, and research design.
  3. Explore practical applications of ChatGPT in scientific research, focusing on its role in data analysis and the overall enhancement of research productivity for researchers and students.
